Grand Espace

The apartment had been divided in the 1970s into five small rooms that turned their backs on each other. The owner wanted the opposite. A large living-dining space opening onto the sea, an island kitchen, two intimate bedrooms and a study.

We reorganised the volumes in collaboration with the contractor. Two load-bearing walls were doubled and pierced, the other partitions taken down. The living space now stretches to ninety square metres and reads the bay end to end the moment you enter.

The palette was tuned to the marine light. Off-white walls, raw-white ceilings, wide-board bleached oak floors. Pale sheers filter the blue reflection without blocking it. Colour pieces, few but firm, are concentrated in the textiles and objects: a navy rug in the living room, a terracotta sofa in the main bedroom.

Materials were chosen to hold the salt. Washed linen, tight-weave cotton, lightly aged pale leather, matt-black metalwork treated for outdoor exposure. The island kitchen has a pale-stone worktop and a sandblasted frosted-glass splashback to bounce the bay light back into the room.
